Drain Cleaning Emergencies – Protect Your Drains From Halloween Nightmares!

1 min

Every year over Halloween thousands of pounds of pumpkins are carved away to create scary jack-o-lanterns, delicious cakes and pies…and plumbing nightmares!

During the weeks preceding Halloween, plumbing companies phone’s start ringing with customers who have drain emergencies. Their drains and garbage disposals have been clogged with pumpkin seeds and pulp, the remnants of Halloween fun. And yes, us plumbers aren’t complaining… but we figured we’d lend a little hand so that you can ensure your Halloween nightmares are only of the ghoulish variety!

Over Halloween (and all year long) Make sure to follow these simple steps to ensure your drains stay clear!

  • First….never put pumpkin pulp or seeds down any drains, including the toilet, sink, or garbage disposal. Pumpkin pulp, which is stringy will clog the drains and wrap itself around the garbage disposal mechanism, rendering it useless. The same tip goes with any fibrous food scraps…throw it in the trash, not down the drains!
  • If you already have problematic drains, try using an eco- friendly drain cleaning like Bio Clean, which eats away at any organic waste in your pipes.
  • When your carving your pumpkins you can make clean up a snap, by carving over newspaper scraps. Once you’re done with your carving, simply wrap up the pumpkin scraps and throw it in the trash.
  • Instead of throwing the seeds away, bake them for a tasty Halloween treat. It’s healthy for you, and healthy for your drains!

If you follow these simple rules, your drains should be safe from any Halloween backups. Halloween should be a time to celebrate, not worry about overflowing sinks, backed up toilets, and garbage disposals that don’t work right.
